Eczema

Eczema is a general term for various skin conditions. Approximately 10 to 20 percent of the world's population is affected by this chronic, relapsing, and very itchy rash at some point in their lifetime. Fortunately the condition happens early in childhood and disappears with age. The itching and scratching associated with eczema happens from the inflammatory response to irritating substances overreacting and causing discomfort on the body. Eczema is NOT contagious but, unfortunately, cannot be cured. For most eczema patients the condition may be managed well with treatment and avoidance of outbreak triggers.

Although eczema may look different from person to person, it is characterized by dry, red, extremely itchy patches on the skin. Eczema is often referred to as "the itch that rashes" since prolonged scratching results in rashes. It can occur on just about any part of the body; however, most outbreaks are found on the face, neck, elbows, knees and ankles.

One of the most important components of an eczema treatment is to prevent scratching. Because eczema is usually dry and itchy, the most common treatment is the use of lotions and creams to moisturize. If the condition persists or worsens, another effective treatment is the application of nonprescription corticosteroid creams and ointments to reduce inflammation. Prescription corticosteroid creams and ointments are more effective, but their use is often limited due to unwanted side effects. Skin affected by eczema may frequently become infected, in which case, an antibiotic is also part of treatment.
