Acne
Acne vulgaris, more commonly referred to simply as acne, is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the oil glands that affects at least 85% of adolescents and young adults. Distribution of acne is limited to areas with well-developed oil glands including the face, back, chest, and upper arms. Unlike other dermatological conditions, which may be limited to areas covered by clothing, acne is usually visible. This can lead to detrimental psychiatric disorders that develop secondary to acne. Clinical depression, social phobia, and certain anxiety disorders have been associated with acne.
Currently, many effective therapies are available for the treatment of acne. These include topical therapies such as retinoids and benzoyl peroxide. Oral antibiotics and hormonal therapies, including oral contraceptives, are also being used effectively. The only agent to induce long-term drug-free remission as a potential cure is isotretinoin (Accutane).
There are several factors to consider when choosing a treatment option. The severity of acne is considered, which is determined by the presence of lesions and heavy growth. Duration and scarring of the condition are two other considerations. One study found that as many as 74% of patients waited over a year before seeking medical attention. This delay is of concern as duration of active acne is extended and the chance of scarring is increased. It is important that a treatment that can prevent scarring is chosen to prevent any permanent physical complications. Finally the psychological and psychiatric health of an individual and their health-related quality of life should be considered.
